Biography
My current work incorporates scenes and images from some of the movies within the horror and science fiction genre that have had a personal and profound resonance in my consciousness. I sample both high-end artistic psychological film and mass-culture mainstream horror and sci-fi equally; the isolated images being made equal by the act of painting them. In most instances I appropriate peripheral details and establishing shots, as well as the more melodramatic imagery, rendering them detached from their context, yet retaining the atmosphere and mood of the original source. I use these moments to express underlying themes and emotions that emerge from the visual language inherent within the genre, such as anxiety, loneliness, alienation and fear of the unknown.
Some of my major influences have been Edward Hopper, Cindy Sherman, Gregory Crewdson, Munch, Goya, Velazquez and Hammershoi. I have also been influenced by Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream and movie soundtracks.
I started painting on my own, progressing through City and Guilds courses and eventually Graduating from the University of East London with a 1st Class Degree in Fine Art.
I have exhibited in group and solo shows in London, New York, Philadelphia, Moscow, Greece and Berlin.
